What to expect on your first visit
At Saint John on the Desert we understand that walking into a church for the first time is not always easy. We would like you to know right from the start that we are a congregation that welcomes all people into our church. Anticipating common concerns, we are providing the information below so that your first visit might be easier.
What time should I arrive?
Our worship time begins at 10:00am. It is always good to come just a few minutes early to find your seat and get comfortable. When you come in the door you will receive a printed Worship Bulletin that is designed to lead you through our worship service. You can expect to make friends on your first visit.
What is Saint John’s worship like?
At Saint John we believe that everyone participates in the worship of our Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. At a typical worship service you can expect to sing both contemporary and traditional music in praise of God, share prayers for individuals, our neighborhoods, city, state, country and world, hear the reading of scripture, a sermon intended to invite a personal response to God, and the offering of our whole selves to God.
What about my children?
Your children are welcome to remain in worship with you or join the other children (ages 5 through 5th grade) in Worship and Wonder. Church volunteers provide a meaningful, interactive, and inclusive experience for children as they learn about God’s love for all of creation through Jesus Christ.
What about nursery care for infants and toddlers?
We always welcome children of all ages in our worship. If you would like nursery care we have a staffed nursery that is devoted to the care of your children during worship. The nursery is just a few steps from the sanctuary – the room in which we worship.
What should I wear?
“As God’s own, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony”
Colossians 3: 12, 14
These words of the Apostle Paul describe our dress code. When it comes to what you are wearing you can expect to feel welcomed (and you will likely see others) in shorts and sandals, or more formal wear; please wear whatever you are most comfortable in.
How long will I be there?
Our Worship generally takes about an hour. Following worship you are invited to join us for a cup of coffee, a cold drink, a cookie and some conversation. The kids have a playground immediately adjacent to where we gather.
Is there something for my teenage kids?
We welcome your teens into our time of worship each Sunday and work to include them. Our youth group meets weekly and all teens are invited. When you visit with your teens you can expect to meet Rebeka Denson, our minister to youth.
